Resumo

Abstract: A translation into Portuguese of Siluae 2.5 by Publius Papinius Statius (ca. 40-50 AD – ca. 95 AD) is offered along with a presentation of the author and a few relevant critical assumptions. The poem, titled Leo mansuetus (“The Tame Lion”), is a poetic portrayal of the animal’s death in an arena spectacle, but above all it depicts – something rather unusual in the consolatio mode – the emperor being moved by the sight thereof.

Keywords: Statius; Siluae; translation; Leo mansuetus; consolation.
