Elementos da tradição gnóstica em E.A. poe

Abstract

Resumo: Os estudos sobre os contos de Poe ocupam-se principalmente dos significados literais, morais, alegóricos e pscicológicos. O presente artigo é uma tentativa de contribuição a tais estudos, enfocando a metafísica e o projeto estético do autor. Poe parace adotar a crença gnóstica de que o conhecimento é a única forma de liberação para o ser humano decaído. Isto é, o Self somente emerge quando o eu é destruído. O objeto central deste estudo é o uso intertextual de elementos gnósticos que Poe faz ao escrever sobre a luta do homem pela sua individuação.

Abstract: Studies about Poe's tales are manly concerned with literal, moral, allegorical and psychological meanings. The present paper is an attempt at a contribution to such studies, focusing, however on the author's metaphysics and aesthetic project. Poe seems to adopt the Gnostic belief that knowledge is the only means of liberation for the fallen human being. That is, the Self can only emerge when the I is destroyed. The central issue of this study came to be Poe's intertextual use of Gnostic elements to write about man's struggle for individuation.
