INTERNATIONALIZATION, DIGITIZATION AND THE CHANGING LANGUAGE AND LITERACY LANDSCAPE OF BRAZILIAN UNIVERSITIES

Over the last three decades, far-reaching changes have taken place in universities across the world due to internationalization and digitization. Higher education has expanded and has become an increasingly significant player within a globalizing knowledge-based economy. There is greater staff mobility and involvement in international research projects. Student enrollment has also increased and diversified, through national widening access programs and through recruitment of international students. In addition, digitization of research and teaching is reconfiguring contemporary academic research and transforming the nature of teaching/learning practices. As a direct consequence of these institutional policies and practices, there has been considerable change in the language and literacy landscapes of universities across the globe.

The aim of this special issue of Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada is to focus in on recent research into the specific nature of the changes taking place in the language and linguistic landscapes of different Brazilian universities. It will showcase research of a qualitative and ethnographic nature which has investigated the lived experiences of university staff and students, in different disciplines, and which has provided detailed insights into their perspectives on changes in the language policies and practices of their universities, and in the use and production of texts (on and offline) for research or for teaching/learning purposes. As Heller (2008:250) has argued: “Ethnographies … allow us to see how language practices are connected to the very real conditions of people’s lives, to discover how and why language matters to people in their own terms, and to watch processes unfold over time”.

In order to disseminate research in this field to a global readership, this special issue will include articles in English only. Data in Portuguese is, of course, accepted but it will need to be accompanied by a translation into English.
