Adjetivos graduais e a interpretação de maximizadores e minimizadores / Gradable Adjectives and the Interpretation of Maximizers and Minimizers

Abstract

Resumo: O objetivo principal do artigo é mostrar que a distinção entre adjetivos graduais relativos e absolutos é relevante gramaticalmente em português, e o objetivo secundário é discutir a interpretação dos maximizadores como completamente e dos minimizadores como ligeiramente. Aplicamos os testes propostos por Kennedy (2007) e verificamos que os modificadores completamente e ligeiramente são sensíveis à estrutura da escala, como previsto. Contudo, diferentemente do inglês, os adjetivos relativos em português aceitam a modificação pelo minimizador ligeiramente na leitura gradual. Mostramos que isso é um efeito da sua semântica, que é sensível a padrões mínimos (sejam eles contextuais ou lexicais). Identificamos também que a classe dos adjetivos que geram escalas fechadas possui duas subclasses: pares como cheio/vazio possuem uma escala com lacuna extensional; enquanto um par como aberto/fechado possui transição natural entre os polos. Sobre a semântica dos modificadores, vemos que completamente possui duas leituras, uma mereológica e uma gradual, enquanto ligeiramente, além da leitura gradual, produz uma leitura pragmática de atenuação.

Abstract: The first aim of the paper is to show that the distinction between relative gradable adjectives and absolute gradable adjectives has grammatical import in Portuguese and the second aim is to discuss the interpretation of maximizers like completamente 'completely' and minimizers like ligeiramente ‘slightly’. We applied the tests suggested in Kennedy (2007) and we verified that the modifiers completamente and ligeiramente are sensitive to the adjectival scale structure, as predicted. However, unlike English, relative adjectives in Portuguese accept the modification by ligeiramente in the degree reading. We show that this is yield by its semantics, which is sensitive to minimum standards (being them contextual or lexical). We identified that the class of adjectives which have closed scales has two subclasses: pairs like cheio/vazio 'full/empty' have an extension gap; while pairs like aberto/fechado 'open/closed' have a natural transition between the sides of the scale. On the modifiers semantics, we saw that completely has two readings, one mereological and another gradable, whereas ligeiramente, besides the degree reading, yields a pragmatic attenuation reading.
